Daughters of Madness: Growing Up and Older with a Mentally Ill Mother was published in 2007 by Praeger/Greenwood. It’s based on my interviews with women who grew up with a mentally ill mother, and includes a summary of recent research in the interpersonal neurobiology of attachment and maternal impairment. Sons of Madness: Growing Up and Older with a Mentally Ill Parent was published in August of 2013 by Praeger/Greenwood. It’s based on my interviews with men who grew up with a mentally ill mother or father and includes a discussion of the impact of stigma on children and adults in families with mentally ill members. There is also discussion of the emotional development of boys, and comparisons of the experiences of girls vs. boys growing up with mentally ill parents.
